Sony HXR-MC1P

This is the new Sony HXR-MC1P High Definition helmet camera system.
We were wondering how long it would take for Sony to come up with a high definition head camera and now they have done it!

We're really impressed with the video quality this thing kicks out. Currently much better than anything else on the market.

You can consider this to be a true 1080i two piece camcorder system that is solid state. It records video to Sony memory sticks in ultra high quality. Video resolution is full 1920 x 1080, 50i at an extremely high bit rate of 16mb/s.

It uses the latest AVC-HD H.264 codec to compress the video whilst maintaining high quality video.

The recorder part can be safely stored away or worn on a belt using the supplied belt clip. A 2m cable is hard wired from the camera head to the recorder part.

The high definition head camera part contains an optical 10x zoom with touch sensitive zoom controls on the recorder unit. It uses a Sony Vario Tessar Carl Zeiss lens for optimum image and colour reproduction. The camera part is "Splash Proof" and the recorder part needs to be protected from getting wet.

At full quality a 16gb Sony memory stick will hold about 2 hours of video and the supplied li-ion battery will also last around two hours on a full charge.

The stereo mic is built-in to the camera head and has variable gain control. This system uses a clever Dolby algorithm for surround sound and zoom mic control.

Fortunately, Sony realized the importance of including 1/4" standard thread mounts not only on the camera but also on the recorder part. This means you can mount both the head camera part and the recorder using any of the suction or clamp mounts found on this site.

As you would expect from any Sony high definition product, this system screams of both image and video quality...it's out new favorite toy in the office. The touch screen menu system as found in most Sony camcorders is very easy to use and provides a huge amount of features. We fully recommend getting hold of an HDMI cable and plugging this direct to a good quality 1080 capable TV or Monitor. The resulting video is stunning for not just a hi-def helmet camera but also for most high definition camcorders too.

To edit the footage from the HXR-MC1P you will either need a copy of Sony Vegas (we use this all the time) or you will need to convert the .mtv files using software such as Xilisoft HD video converter (we use this too!)
You can download a copy of HD video converter from this page.

What Sony have to say about their HXR-MC1P High definition helmet camera system.

Capture Stunning HD Minicam Pictures - Anywhere.

Sony proudly presents a stunning High Definition head camera and recorder system that represents the final piece of the HD video production jigsaw. The HXR-MC1P is an easy to use HD head camera system, consisting of a small camera head and a handheld controlling unit with16:9 LCD panel and recording function. The first 16:9 bullet camera commercially available.

This small all-in-one helmet camera system needs no extra equipment - take it out of the box and start filming. Also, the hi-def head camera unit is splash-proof, allowing safe usage in tough outdoor conditions, such as rain or when you are filming near water. HD POV is here!

Furthermore, the unique style of the HXR-MC1P enables operators to record HD video in unusual places and from new interesting angles, such as filming a sport scene from the participant's point of view (POV) or a motor sporting event from onboard a vehicle.
The built-in 16:9 LCD touch screen panel on the main recorder unit allows users to play back and review the footage immediately after it has been shot.

The HXR-MC1P camera and recorder opens up a whole range of creative HD shooting possibilities.

The HXR-MC1P can record 1080i HD or SD video and sound in places that no ordinary HD helmet cameras can access.
It's possible to attach it to various equipment, such as a helmet, by using the 1/4" screw hole at the bottom of the unit.
This enables you to capture HD footage from angles that you have only ever experienced in SD before now.

Suitable for a multitude of sporting applications

With the HXR-MC1P, it is possible to capture powerful visuals of motor sporting events that give the viewer the drivers or riders point of view (POV). Because the camera is small, you have a bigger choice of where to mount it on the vehicle. And by using an optional wide angle lens, you can even get detailed shots of the interior of a car.

Alternatively, if you are shooting while taking part in extreme sports such as skydiving, paragliding, or skateboarding, it is hard to check the images you're recording.

With the HXR-MC1P, even if you attach the camera to your helmet, you can easily check the angle using the LCD panel of the control unit and easily adjust the angle of view with the zoom buttons. Once the recording to Memory Stick has started, simply activate the control unit's HOLD switch to prevent any operating errors, put the control unit into your backpack or a pocket and get going!

Ideal for shooting wildlife

The tiny camera of the HXR-MC1P is also very good for filming small animals and insects. The small size of the camera makes it perfect for filming wild animals.

Plus, with a continuous recording time of about 405 minutes (6 hours 45 minutes)*, the camera can be left recording for long periods to ensure you capture the right footage.

* Continuous recording with the optional NP-FH100 battery (LCD backlight = OFF). With ordinary use, with frequent recording start/stop and zooming etc., this will reduce to approximately 200 minutes.

Perfect for POV images

Images taken from the viewpoint of operators with special skills, such as engineers, can be used for simulation material or for training purposes to help others acquire the skills. Also, the recorded video can be used to analyze the actions or the action pathways made by a person or object carrying the camera.

1080i Compact HD Camera

Even though it is equipped with a full HD shooting (1920 x 1080i) capability, a 10x optical zoom and a built-in microphone, the camera is compact, measuring only 37 x 42.5 x 86.5 mm (1 1/2 x 1 11/16 x 3 1/2 inch).

Exmor™ CMOS Sensor - Cutting-edge Image Sensor Technology

The HXR-MC1P uses the 1/5-inch "Exmor" CMOS sensor, which is also used in Sony professional camcorders and high-end D-SLR cameras. This achieves low noise thanks to multiple micro A/D (analogue to digital) converters.

The image sensor in the HXR-MC1P also uses the ClearVid pixel array, which has 45-degree rotated pixels.
This unique layout offers ultra high picture quality while keeping low-light sensitivity.

Long-time HD or SD Recording to Memory Stick PRO Duo™

Memory Stick PRO Duo offers the optimum recording media for the compact HXR-MC1P recorder. In addition, the highly efficient compression methods used in both HD and SD modes achieve long recording times, which make the most of Memory Stick PRO Duo's storage capacity.

In HD recording mode, video is recorded in AVCHD, which uses MPEG-4 AVC/ H.264 compression - the same method used in Blu-ray Disc™.

If SD recording mode is selected, video is recorded in MPEG-2.

All-in-one Recording Unit and Battery Operation Expands Shooting Flexibility

Recording and playback are possible via the control unit of the HXR-MC1P. You do not need any external recorder/player. Maximum battery operation of up to 405 minutes* is available thanks to the use of the Exmor CMOS sensor. This means you can shoot anytime, anywhere without having to worry about power supply.

* Continuous recording with the optional NP-FH100 battery (LCD backlight = OFF). With ordinary use, with frequent recording start/stop and zooming etc., this will reduce to approximately 200 minutes.

Remote Monitoring and Control

The control unit has a 2.7-inch (16:9), 211,000-pixel LCD panel that uses ClearPhoto LCD plus, which enables you to instantly review the images captured by the camera. Furthermore, all menu settings can be accessed via this touch-screen LCD panel.

The control unit is equipped with a recording button, zoom buttons and a manual control dial, that let you control the camera remotely while watching the images.

With the HXR-MC1P, it is easy to shoot in a way that is impossible with ordinary camcorders.
No special equipment, such as an external monitor or remote control device, is required.

Live Relay/Recording

The control unit of the HXR-MC1P has connectors for both HDMI output and analogue composite video output. By using a commercially available HDMI/HD-SDI converter or an A/D converter, you can also make live relays or recordings using HD-SDI signals.

The HXR-MC1P can help you to achieve unique and powerful images during live events, by mounting it close to the action - such as inside the goal during a football match or near the hands of a musician during a concert.
The HDMI and analogue video connector can output SD signals if the recording mode of the HXR-MC1P is set to SD.
