So why choose a bullet camera over a self-contained helmet camera?

The Benefits of Bullet Cameras

Size – Being compact and lightweight enables bullet cameras to be mounted almost anywhere.

Easy operation – No complicated menus or buttons. Simple one touch ON/OFF operation means the camera is either ON and recording or it is switched off.

The Advantages of Bullet Cameras

Bullet cameras pretty much started the action camera craze. In the beginning the most popular solution was to rig a bullet camera directly into a camcorder’s AV inputs. It wasn’t pretty, with wires everywhere and a separate battery pack to power the bullet camera. A very cumbersome set up indeed.

The name bullet camera came about from the physical shape of the cameras themselves. The term “Bullet Camera” is now used to describe popular helmet cameras using this small, cylindrical form factor. Customers like having the sleek camera sitting almost un-noticed on the side of their head gear.

Due to their shape and mass, the cameras are very easy to mount without getting in the way. They have simple controls and are very rugged in their design.

We find Bullet Cameras are most popular for motorsport and with cyclists, horseriders, skiers and snowboarders. They are also great for road safety purposes and offer a real alternative to the bulky helmet cameras.

Bullet HD 2 Helmet Mounted Camera

The Advantages of Bullet Cameras

Size

Low profile

Mounting versatility

Easy operation

Dogcam Bullet Cameras

In 2010 Dogcam launched the Bullet HD camera. This was a small, self-contained high definition bullet camera recording high grade 720p video and was one of the smallest bullet cameras available at the time at 22mm diameter, 78mm long and weighing in at just 32grms.

Despite its compact size, the camera contained a digital video recorder, a Li-ion battery and an internal microphone. For the first time customers could fit a helmet camera which was the size of a packet of Polo mints and capture high definition video.

Shortly after this it’s launch, Dogcam released the Bullet HD WIDE camera, a wide field-of-view version of the Bullet HD, with a 135 degree wide angled lens. To date this has been Dogcam’s bestselling camera.

Here at Dogcam we make sure we keep up with the latest in Bullet Camera technology and in June 2013 Dogcam will be launching the smallest and lightest full HD 1080p bullet camera in the world – the Dogcam Bullet HD2.

Helmet cameras highlight divisions between cyclists and drivers

Road-rage rider says helmet cameras should be used for safety, not online sensationalism

Helmet camera records road rage driver

The driver who assaulted Stephen Perrin gets out of his car in helmet camera footage of the incident the cyclist posted online.

A cyclist who recorded and posted a road-rage incident online in which he was attacked by a van driver says he now regrets the way the motorist has been subjected to a campaign of abusive calls and emails. Stephen Perrin is one of a burgeoning number of cyclists who, fed up of daily run-ins with drivers, has taken to wearing a helmet camera on his cycling helmet. But he has now appealed for people to leave the man involved alone.

“It’s the modern version of being put in the stocks,” said Perrin, who was knocked off his bike and punched repeatedly earlier this month. The driver was apparently infuriated by the cyclist for sounding his air horn after Perrin claimed he had been “cut up” for “giving parked cars room. I put the video online because it needs to be seen, but the grief he and his family have got since from trolls and the like disgusts me,” he said.

Despite Perrin recording the altercation in a Birmingham street, police refused to prosecute the driver, who was identified by local people. Perrin also posted the car registration number on the Birmingham Cyclist website.

Former Olympic champion Chris Boardman saw the helmet camera footage and passed on the link to his 80,000 followers on Twitter, which led to the situation “getting out of hand”, according to Perrin. He added: “The driver has a small business and I don’t want to see him run out of town because of the abuse he’s getting. Obviously what he did that day was his fault and I do feel there should have been criminal consequences for it, but a few idiots online always take things too far.”

Sales of cycling-helmet cameras, which can cost up to £500, have soared and the number of road-rage incidents appearing on YouTube and other websites is growing.

“I drive and cycle,” said Perrin, a factory worker from the south of Birmingham. “I make mistakes on the road, we all do, but when I’m in my car it’s a big metal box that can take a couple of bumps. On a bike it’s flesh and bone. I got a camera for my own security.”

A recent study in Australia looking at cycle-camera footage showed motorists were responsible for 87% of accidents or near-misses with cyclists, mainly due to lack of driver awareness. Joe Williams, a spokesman for the cycling lobby group Sustrans, said: “The boom in helmet cams is a real symptom of the safety issues out there that we are hearing about again and again. It says much about the lack of a culture of mutual respect that people feel they have to protect themselves in this way. Too many people are dying on our roads. Everyone has a right to use our roads – motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. Safety is one of the main reasons people don’t pick up their bikes with any confidence. People see roads as dangerous.”

Williams called for police to act in cases such as Perrin’s where there was video evidence.

RoadHawk Ride helmet safety bullet camera

A study commissioned by a car insurance company this weekend suggested that drivers fail to see 22% of cyclists on the road in clear view of their vehicle. Direct Line used revolutionary eye-tracking technology to establish that motorists who used satnavs were even less likely to spot a cyclist than those who did not. Some 24% of cyclists were “invisible” to drivers who used a satnav, while the younger the driver, the more likely they were not to spot a cyclist – 31% of cyclists were not seen by motorists aged 20-29, compared with 21% by those aged 50-59.

The corresponding figures for motorcyclists were also poor, with 15% not seen by motorists. By contrast, drivers spotted all but 4% of pedestrians who stepped into the road without using a crossing. The problem was worse in London, where 30% of cyclists were “invisible”. A Direct Line spokesperson, Vicky Bristow, described the results as “frightening” and called for the government to take action. She said: “Encouraging all road users to be extra vigilant will improve road safety, but tackling an issue of this scale requires top-down change.” It allowed researchers to establish exactly where drivers directed their vision, which was often at clouds, buildings and passers-by.

In 2011-12, 2,660 cyclists were seriously injured on the roads, the highest number this century, while deaths hit a five-year high of 122. Of those, 106 are known to have been due to a collision with a motor vehicle.

Cyclist’s helmet camera helps police trace road rage driver. The victim was riding in Moseley when driver pulled over and hit out – injuring the cyclist and damaging his bike.

A Birmingham cyclist who was assaulted by a van driver has helped police track down the road rage attacker by using his own helmet camera.

Road Rage Driver Caught On Helmet Camera

The cyclist was riding along Woodbridge Road, in Moseley, on March 16 and was attacked after a brief altercation. The driver who had overtaken stopped his van further down the road and shoved the cyclist off his bike before assaulting him. The victim has since received compensation from the driver after agreeing to a local resolution.

West Midlands Police said a 36-year-old local man was identified from the footage and was interviewed under caution at a police station. Both parties agreed to a local resolution which means the cyclist has already been financially compensated for the damage to the bike and will also receive a formal written apology.

The victim, who calls himself “Black Country Bike Cam” on YouTube, has uploaded more than 100 videos from his travels around Birmingham – some of which result in verbal confrontations with drivers.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Local resolutions are a common sense, cost-effective way of dealing with crimes. These resolutions can only be reached if both victim and offender are in agreement. Officers took a number of factors into account in this case, including the fact the offender showed remorse, had no previous convictions, admitted common assault and that, despite the video appearing shocking, the victim thankfully suffered only minor injuries.”

Meanwhile, the wife of the driver, says she has been forced to call in police after receiving hundreds of email and phone threats after the footage of the attack went viral on the internet showing her business van. The woman, who does not want to be identified, said there was “no excuse” for her husband’s behaviour and added that he did not work at the business.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said they were aware of the alleged threats.

Rally driver turns radio presenter

Cornish rally driver Matt Cotton will turn to a microphone for this year’s MSA British Rally Championship as he joins the BRC LIVE radio station which is a new feature of the 2013 season. Matt will hang up his helmet to deliver end of stage reports and driver interviews from all 7 rounds of the series which will be broadcast online and on the popular BRC Smartphone APP.

Matt Cotton In Action

The BRC Live service will be spearheaded by Stagetime Rally Group director Neil Cloughley who will pilot the show throughout the event, delivering the latest news, updates and results from the studio. Service area interviews will be managed by world-class co-driver Carl Williamson and coupled with the end-of-stage reports, the BRC Live facility will be a fitting compliment to Britain’s leading rally championship.

Matt is relishing the challenge:

“Of course I`d love to be competing in the MSA British Rally Championship, but this is a fantastic opportunity to get as close to the action as I can whilst being able to develop my MCR Marketing Solutions brand. Staying in touch with the drivers and teams is really important and I’m really excited for the year ahead. It will be great to work with some of the best names in rallying, I can’t wait!”

Matt will be joined on his end of stage reports by MCR Marketing Solutions partner Bex Hinton who will ensure the BRC LIVE APP is kept updated with quotes and images from the drivers as they exit the stage.

The BRC Live transmissions began on the season opener Rally North Wales last weekend (6th/7th April) and will continue throughout all events in the British Rally Championship calendar.

Dogcam Sport has been supporting Matt Cotton with on-board cameras since his come back in the 2012 season.

Hero3: Black Edition Review By The Droid Guy

GoPro has come up with its latest feature-packed action camera, the Hero3 Black Edition, which is designed for people who love spending their time outdoors like skiers, bikers, divers, base jumpers and race car drivers.
Anyone who wants to capture life’s fast-paced adventure is in for a treat with the launch of this new still and video camera from GoPro. The looks of the new Hero3 are very similar to the old Hero2. However, when you look at it closely, you will see that the difference lies in the more solid structure of the camera and the thinness and lightness of the device. Hero3 is also more compact and significantly smaller than its predecessor.

GoPro HD Hero 3 Black Edition

A Step from its Predecessors

Back in 2009, GoPro came out with its HD Hero, the first camera to deliver stills and wide-angle HD video. In Hero2, the company took it a notch higher by adding high-res sensor, fast burst mode (which is mighty important for Hero’s consumers—adrenaline junkies) and wider field view.

Crisp and Smooth Images

With the Hero3 Black Edition, GoPro decided to go way up the scale by packing a greater still and video performance of up to 4k, an f/2.8 wide-angle lens with a 12-megapixel sensor and a built-in WiFi. It can shoot from slow-mode to high-resolution fast bursts. Whatever you want from the Hero3 Black Edition, it will surely offer more than what you’re expecting.
When it comes to the images, nothing delivers sharper and crisper photographs than the Hero3 Black Edition. It doesn’t matter if you’re shooting in daylight or low light environments, the Hero3 Black edition will have your back.

Ease of Use

If you have already used a GoPro camera before, then operating the Hero3 will be a piece of cake for you. The company didn’t change much of how the camera works. There are still two main buttons—one on top and the other at the front. The button placed on top is for start/stop/record purposes while the one located at the front is the navigation pad. You can view the menu and its various options on the small LCD screen.
There are basically four shooting modes—movie, still, time lapse and burst. Aside from the two buttons, there is another button that will turn the WiFi on and off. There are two LED indicators that will tell you if the camera is in shooting mode and if the WiFi is turned on.

On the side of the camera, you will find the micro-HDMI and mini-USB ports. There is also a MicroSD slot, a WiFi key, a microphone and three pinholes for audio alerts. The three pinholes will alert you if you are eating so much of your MicroSD slot and if the Hero3 is turned on.

GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition In Flat Lens Housing

The Hero3 Black Edition beats its competitions (Sony and Contour) where it truly mattered—user-friendliness, sharp and crisp images and high-definition video clips. However, the battery life is something that GoPro must soon address. Recording at 1080p over 30fps lasted for 1.5 hours.
