Here is something to remember about the HQR range (HQR1, HQR2 and HQR-C2) of recorders. Each time you turn the HQR on it will look on the CF card you have inserted for a configuration file called "DEVICE.INI". This file contains the settings and tells the HQR how to behave. To get the most out of your HQR recorder you should install the software supplied in order to create the DEVICE.INI file and set the recorder up according to your requirements.

Amongst the most important settings are the ability to change from MPEG4 to MPEG2 mode in order to get higher quality video and audio. MPEG2 mode also benefits from having a non-corruptable file structure so that even if the recorder is turned off during recording, unlike mpeg4 mode, the files will still be useable.

With the software you can configure the quality settings and image settings. You can tell the unit to record in MPEG2 or MPEG4 mode. You can set the audio input depending on what you are using as a microphone.

In this video we will set the unit to record in MPEG4 mode at highest quality using the internal mic and turning the GAIN (mic volume) down to minimum. We will turn OFF the time and date stamp and then save the config file to the CF card.

We will then show you what the config file looks like on the CF card.
Once you have followed this guide you will be able to insert the CF card in to the HQR recorder and start recording.

The HQR2 produces higher quality videos in MPEG2 mode and the audio quality is also better. In this guide we use the HQR software first to set the recorder to film in MPEG2 mode using the highest quality setting. Then we show you how to use this software to convert the MPEG2 video from your CF card to your computer. 

The process of converting the MPEG2 video files from the CF card should be just as quick as transferring a normal video file from a memory card to a hard disk. So, unless you are using an Apple Mac OS it is well worth learning how to do this and getting the most from the HQR recorders.
